Program Techniques

Trial-The PP's serve as the jury and have the responsibility of answering the charge.  Before the PP's vote they break up into groups and discuss the trial.  The program ends with the jury voting on the verdict.

-May not be real

-Must present correct information

Examples

Charge:  Israel is on trial for its actions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip

Israel has handled the Palestinian problem irresponsibly

Circumcision as a symbol of covenant is no longer valid

The United Nations is no longer an effective world peace-keeping force

Trial Topics:  "Animal World vs. Humankind"

                     The Peoples Court:  Euthanasia

                                                    Abortion

                                                    Capital Punishment

                                                    School Prayer

Town Meeting-The group is divided into a number of smaller groups.  Each of the smaller groups prepares one position understanding the historical context, the specific position, the rationale for supporting the position and the way in which their position relates to the others.  It is often useful for each group to prepare a short speech or song to express their position.

-Most useful in situations in which the goal is to present a contemporary political problem, a historical conflict, or a point in history at which different ideas of possible courses of action come into contact with one another.

-Groups are then to debate and ask questions

-Groups are to present there sides

-At the end of the program end the role playing and then take a vote.   Each participant is to vote as if he/she been present at the time of the actual decision.

Panel Discussion-The moderator introduces the topic and then each panelist presents his viewpoint.  (Panel of "Experts")  The participants are then to ask the panelist questions.  The participants can also give comments on the different panelist positions.  The wrap-up should emphasize the important points of the discussion and should relate the historical outcome of the meeting being stimulated.

-Make sure the panelists know their stuff.  (They have to be able to answer the PP's questions)

-No vote is needed at the end of the meeting

Examples:  View of God

                Relationship to Israel

                Who are the real Jews?

Hike Through History-The group is divided into a number of smaller groups, each of which will prepare a scene for the "hike".  Each group is to present a specific event in the form of a skit, song, dance, or any other medium.  The group first discusses the event, and then plans its presentation.

Examples:  Where did we come from?  (Jewish History)

                  Jewish Leadership

Women Leaders from yesterday and today

Carousel-All the participants are gathered all together.   One at a time the individual groups separate from the center of the program area and go to a place in the room to work on a skit, song, etc.  At the end of the program the groups gather in and each group presents  their skit, song etc.

-This is used when there is not enough time or space

-Skits and songs can be interactive with the other participants in the audience.

Action Programs-The participants are given a "mission" and are given hints on how to accomplish that mission.  They travel with a group leader from place to place accomplishing a task.  Once they accomplish a task they are given the next task.  At the end the groups are gathered to celebrate the successful completion (or failure) of the mission.

-Provide a map to the group leaders

-If sneaking around the PP's at one point should have to pass their antagonists

Examples:  Illegal immigration

Survival (Homelessness program in which the PP's had to make a certain amount of money at the

different stations in order to stay alive.)

Mock T.V. Game Show-Several members of the group assume the roles of various personalities (all having given a fact sheet and sufficient time to prepare earlier)  A moderator is selected who introduces the panel and then asks questions of them to determine "who is the real Messiah", which group "has the best concept" or anything else that would create a single winner.  At the end the moderator can say "Will the real________, please stand up?"  Group discussion can follow.

-Panel must be able to improvise

-Usually funny and entertaining...but most of all a great learning experience.

Carnival-For this type of program a certain topic must be broken down into 6 to 9 key sentences.  A person will be responsible for saying each of these sentences.  The PP's are lead into the room blindfolded (holding on to a rope).  As they walk each person repeats their sentence over and over again.   The PP's are then gathered in the middle of the room and broken down into discussion groups to discuss what they have heard.

-When displaying an actual carnival type program carnival music should be played

-PP's can be broken up into groups while they are blindfolded (this depends on the number of PP's)

Example:  Old Age Program-  "Step right up, step right up; come watch the old people waste away while their  children ignore them!"

Anti-Semitism Program-  "I don't want you to play outside with that Jew anymore, he's not like us!"

Surprise-When the PP's didn't think that they were having a program.

Example:  Hunger Program-  The PP's go to breakfast/lunch/dinner they are given a number.  1-good food 2-limited food 3-very limited portions of food.

Reality-  When the PP's are put into a situation in which they are told something or put through something that is not true for that very moment.  This is a very effective teaching method but can also be very dangerous.   After the program the group must be deprogrammed.  To do this the truth must be fully explained.

Example:  Speaker- Jews for Jesus:  The speaker talks to the PP's in a large group.  The PP's can ask questions.  At the end the speaker runs out of the room and comes back as a reform leader/actor.
