Communication

Goal:
-To study the impact of communication or miscommunication in a relationship.

Objectives:
-To teach participants the importance of communication in relationships
-To teach participants how to communicate more effectively
-To show participants how communication contributes to a healthy relationship

Materials:
-Index cards with phrases for telephone game
-Index cards with words for word association game
-Index cards with titles of movies/TV shows on them charades
-Group leading packets

Timetable:
Break into groups    0:00-0:03
First Station              0:03-0:11
Second Station        0:11-0:19
Third Station            0:19-0:27
Fourth Station          0:27-0:35
Wrap-up                  0:35-0:40

Detailed Procedure:

Break into Groups:  0:00-0:03
-break participants in to four groups. 
-each of these groups start at four groups
-each of these groups start at a different activity (telephone game, word association, charades, verbal abuse discussion)
-group leaders stay at one station for the whole program
-participants will carousel after each station
-discussion at each station

First station:  0:03-0:11
Telephone Game
-group sits in a circle
-group leader explains game
-group leader whispers phrase into first participants ear
-participant whispers same phrase into next persons ear, etc.
-last participant says phrase out loud
-discussion

These questions are for a discussion about the importance of communicating well.
1)  How different was the end from the beginning?
2)  How does this relate to your communication with others?
3)  Has misconstrued communication ever affected anyone you know?
4)  Why do you think stories get misconstrued between people?
5)  Do you think it is on purpose or by accident?

Second Station:  0:11-0:19
Word Association
-participants sit in a circle
-group leader explains game
-group leader whispers one word into first participants ear
-participant thinks of the first word that comes to mind
-participant whispers that word into next participants ear, etc.
-last participant says out loud their word
-discussion

These questions are aimed toward a discussion of saying what you truly mean and not beating around the bush.
1)  How different was the end from the beginning?
2)  How does this relate to your communication with others?
3)  Has misconstrued communication ever affected anyone you know?
4)  Why do you think stories get misconstrued between people?
5)  Do you think it is on purpose or by accident?

Third Station:  0:19-0:27
Charades
-participants sit in a circle
-group leader explains game
-one participant is chosen
-group leader shows the participant a name of a movie or TV show
-participant acts out words in the title without speaking
-other participants guess the words and the title
-discussion
These questions are aimed towards non-verbal communication.

1)  What is nonverbal communication all about?
2)  How does tone effect communication?
3)  How do facial expressions effect communication?
4)  How does body language effect communication?
5)  Is nonverbal communication more or less or neither as important as verbal communication?
6)  What is easier to interpret-verbal communication or nonverbal communication?

Forth Station:  0:27-0:35
Verbal Abuse
-group leader explains the situation
"Often times girls and guys call each other pet names such as Tiger, Big Boy, Cupcake, Sugar Lips."
-discussion
1)  Do you think this is appropriate?
2)  When in a relationship is it appropriate?
3)  Where is it appropriate?
4)  Do you think people express their true feelings to others by verbal comments like that?
5)  If a person is uncomfortable, will that person say so?
6)  Where does one draw the line between cuteness and uncomfortable?

Wrap-up:  0:35-0:40
-discussion
1)  How does communication effect a relationship?
2)  In what ways can communication make a relationship good?
3)  In what ways can communication make a relationship bad?
